Kembang Sunda is a San Diego based gamelan ensemble that performs traditional Sundanese music from West Java, Indonesia.
What is gamelan? Gamelans are sets of bronze or iron instruments supported by carved wooden racks. It was developed in the ancient courts of Java and Bali and is thought to predate the Hindu-Buddhist culture. Gamelan music layers its pieces with many interlocking melodies with all of the players working together to create a balanced and unique performance.
Kembang Sunda’s mission is to entertain, educate and expose an international audience to the beauty and diversity of Sundanese music and culture. Kembang Sunda, directed by Amy Hacker, has performed throughout Southern California since 2007.
