Kembang Sunda: Indonesian Gamelan Ensemble

Kembang Sunda is a San Diego-based ensemble that performs Sundanese gamelan degung music from West Java, Indonesia.  Degung music developed in the royal Sundanese courts of West Java beginning in the fourteenth century.  The ensemble consists primarily of tuned bronze idiophones; a large hanging gong (go’ong), large rack gongs (jengglong), medium rack gongs (bonang), a mid-range metallophone (panerus), and a high-range metallophone (peking).  Other instruments include a set of tuned drums (kendang), a wooden xylophone (gambang), and a bamboo flute…

Magazine “The Strad” wrote about the Cracow Duo: “Kalinowski and Szlezer, friends since childhood, have a wonderfully natural rapport and there is an arresting quality to their playing that gives life to the music”.

Musicians performed on the most prestigious stages, including: Seoul Arts Center in Seoul, Alfred Newman Hall in Los Angeles, Carnegie Hall in New York, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico, Salle Cortot in Paris, St.Martin-in-the-Fields in London and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

They share a special commitment and fascination with music written by rarely performed Polish composers.

In 2018, the Warner Classics released their newest CD Polish Music Experience album recorded with the Orchestra of the Royal City of Krakow Sinfonietta Cracovia under the baton of Jurek Dybał.

Clinton Davis is an old-time folk musician based in San Diego. A fifth-generation Kentuckian, Davis grew up in Carroll County with faint residues of old time music lingering in the air and in his family’s past. He currently performs on guitar, banjo, fiddle, harmonica, mandolin, and piano. He has performed at folk festivals across the country including Wintergrass (WA), Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival (WA), National Jug Band Jubilee (KY), Brooklyn Folk Festival (NY), the Topanga Banjo & Fiddle Competition (CA), and the Santa Barbara Fiddler’s Convention (CA). In 2015, No Depression called his work “a joyous and soulful restoration of one of the lost treasures of American musical tradition.” That same year, his album with the G Burns Jug Band was awarded “Best Local Recording” at the San Diego Music Awards. Davis is an official artist of the Deering Banjo Company.
